Pakistan Science Foundation

Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), is an autonomous organization under the umbrella of the Federal Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of Pakistan. Since its inception in 1973 the organization has been encouraging the researchers, scientists and faculty members of Public Sector Universities and R&D organizations in the pursuit of scientific knowledge. The grants are in the form of supporting well planned research projects and financial assistance in the form of travel grants to the faculty members to present their latest researches. Grants are also provided for organizing scientific conferences, workshops, seminars etc. COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) has benefited from these programmes. Details of various activities which Pakistan Science Foundation undertakes are listed below:-

1. Research Support

PSF provides funding for research projects in the areas of Agriculture Sciences, Biological Sciences, Bio-technology, Chemical Sciences, Computer/Information Technology, Mathematical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Earth science, Medical science and Physics. The Foundation provides grants to universities and other R&D organizations for projects undertaken by individuals or groups of scientists.

• Under this programme, a project titled “Epidemiological Investigation of Pertussis Infection in Pakistan by Studying the Distribution of ptx, prn, fim Alleles” of Dr. S. Habib Ali Bukhari, Department of Bio-Sciences, CIIT Islamabad costing Rs.1.032 Million has been approved and ongoing.

2. Travel Grants

Grants are provided to scientists, technologists and doctors so that they can present their research work at international forums. The grant covers their travel expenses, registration fee and living expenses. Funds are also provided for attending short term i.e. 1-2 weeks specialized trainings abroad.

• During 2008 CIIT has received one travel grant in respect of Mr. Waseem Asghar Khan, Ph.D Scholar, Department of Mathematics, CIIT, Islamabad amount to Rs.156,270.

3. Grants for Science Conferences

The Foundation provides financial assistance to universities and R&D Organizations for organizing Science Conferences, Seminars, Workshops and Symposia on important scientific topics where scientists present their research findings.

• During 2008 CIIT has received one grant amounting to Rs.50,000 for organizing one day workshop on Research In Computing (CWRC Fall 2008) at CIIT Wah,
