About Distance Education
What is Distance Education?

The term Distance Education is used to describe an educational situation where the instructor and students are separated by time, location or both. Education is delivered either synchronously (define) or asynchronously (define), depending upon the technology used to the remote locations. The means of instruction utilize written correspondence, text, graphics, audio and videotapes, CDs, interactive TV, Internet, audio/video conferencing and such technology. The definition of e-learning is included in Distance Learning since it only concentrates on use of electronic devices.

Virtual Campus at CIIT

>>  About
CIIT has by now, produced more than 6000 graduates. With a current enrolment of about 11500 students and more than 1100 faculty members, it is now the 5th top ranking university in Pakistan. CIIT, at present has six campuses, one each at Islamabad, Abbottabad, Lahore, Wah , Attock and Sahiwal.

After realizing the importance of Distance Education, Directorate of Distance Education was set up at CIIT to establish a ‘Virtual Campus’ just like other campuses. The virtual Campus was then established in June 2008. The Distance Education provided at the Virtual Campus, CIIT makes use of the latest technology and applications, for example, internet and video conferencing.
>> Aims and Objectives
The objective of establishing Distance Education at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) is to promote Distance Education through e-learning using modern Information and Communication Technologies, to enhance quality of education and to optimize the services of qualified, experienced teachers and researchers at CIIT, and to contribute towards the knowledge based economy of the country/nation. We also aim to have interaction with the renowned international academicians for imparting up-to-date knowledge and instill creativity skills in our youth.

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology has ambitiously strived towards innovation and betterment in delivering higher education since its establishment in 2000. According to the 2006-HEC Research Assessment Exercise, CIIT falls in the top 10 research institutes of Pakistan, providing the best of the faculty.

Following the emerging trend of utilizing the information and communication technology and the need to share the expertise of the faculty of all the campuses of CIIT, the Virtual Campus was established in July 2008. The Directorate of Distance Education looks after the affairs of the Virtual Campus, with the main purpose to promote distance education and link other campuses to share experience of the experts and qualified professors.

The Virtual Campus is a relatively new and innovative project in its early stage, promising to go a long way. The support and cooperation of all the campuses of CIIT can play an important role in taking this venture forward. We, at Virtual Campus welcome you all to collaborate to take higher education to a next level throughout Pakistan.
