COURSES

1. COURSE STRUCTURE AND METHODOLOGY

The guiding principle in the teaching of Architecture is that the questions of Tradition and Modernity, Comfort, Environment Sustainability, Appropriate Architecture will not be dealt as separate subjects in an isolated manner. Every assignment or project in the subject of Architectural Design will incorporate these elements at the simple to the complex level so that these issues become an integral part of the student’s (future architect) thinking. Therefore the student will not set out to do a ‘traditional’ or a ‘modern’ design, but will bring his/her own unique and personal approach based on his/her own vision to bear upon all designs that he/she carries out. Thus the student will continuously examine the context of the problem at hand and will discover within himself/herself solutions that are based on his/her values and sensitivities.

The five year course is divided into three stages of a student’s growth:

A. Foundation (1 year)

The Foundation level imparts Intensive training in verbal and graphic communication, logical thinking and the ability to theorize art.

B. Intermediate (2 years)

The Intermediate level ensure the ability to conceive a project as a whole, its form (s), always placed in a context of the street, city and culture; and as a functional entity to fulfill the needs for which it is to be built.

C. Final (2 years)

The Final stage enables a student to think independently, to experiment with form and structure, to better understand contextual issues of society, to determine for himself (herself) the future directions of his development as an architect.

DESIGN STUDIOS

The architectural design studios play a vital role in the INTEGRATED APPROACH TO ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION and as such are an important part of teaching methodology. These studios are envisaged as an environment conducive to effective learning. Students are expected to learn, create and produce their designs using digital technology as tools within all-in-one studios.

1.1. FOUNDATION COURSE

The foundation year is the most important year for the students coming from diverse backgrounds, wherein they get an opportunity to explore and open up their minds to give way to creativity and develop an understanding of the subject. The foundation year is expected to train students to develop a common level of understanding of their environment and streamline their thought process, achieve high technical skills to explain their ideas through verbal (English) and visual media thus focusing on both external (environment) and internal areas (related to mind). This transformation of mind along with development of drawing skills is achieved through the following courses of the foundation year:

  • History of Philosophy of Arts and Architecture:
The course is designed to help the students in making connection between culture and traditions which are the fundamental part of art and architecture of any civilization.
  • Freehand Sketching – Observation and sketching:
This is based on FREEHAND SKETCHING of buildings and architectural environment. The objective is to encourage observation and understanding of the environment through sketching of architectural buildings and elements and to develop necessary skills in students to convey their design ideas through sketches
  • Architectural Drawing:
Architectural Drawing at the Foundation year teaches computer graphic skills parallel to Freehand Sketching. This course imparts the knowledge of up-to-date techniques and software for teaching technical drawings.
  • SUPPORTING MANDATORY COURSES (foundation year):
    • English Comprehension and Composition
    • Mathematics for Architecture
    • Pakistan Studies
    • Islamic Studies

1.2. INTERMEDIATE AND FINAL YEARS

At the intermediate and final years the CORE courses will continue throughout the remaining four years. These courses are designed in a sequence with gradual build up from simple to complex level.

The core courses include:

  • Architecture Design and Presentation
  • History and Philosophy of Architecture
  • Architectural Technologies.

The final year will culminate with the thesis project required to be submitted by each student.

Course Structure & Methodology

Stage Objectives Content Methodology
Foundation Course (OneYear) Communication (oral, verbal, graphic) and art appreciation. Develop a logical thought process with study of mathematics. 1. Excellence in English; Access to Knowledge; study of prose, descriptive, novel, non-fiction; poetry appreciation; written and oral; 1. Training will be concentrated on developing ability to speak, read and write English through class seminars, book reports on books on architecture, such as 'Architectural Composition', 'Grammar of Architecture', etc. Students will be encouraged to read subjects of their liking in fiction, non fiction etc. This is directed towards students understanding of basic design.
2. Mathematics; analytical geometry This course will build on the Intermediate level mathematics to understand analytical geometry, solid geometry, different shapes, curves and their general behavior, techniques of integral and differential calculus and their use in practical geometry.
3. Free Hand sketching: Observation and training of mind and hand. Ability to draw and conceptualize buildings through drawings of traditional and modern buildings in great detail. From simple objects to buildings; vegetation as support for the buildings; building details, interiors, door window treatments. Pre-modern and modern buildings 2. This is meant to be the key course. Students will be trained in sketching starting from simple objects and soon to buildings. They will be encouraged to observe and draw details of windows, shades, window frames and likewise doors and also attempt to capture the texture in their sketches. Later color would be introduced. The target is that at the end of the year each student will have a portfolio showing all his/her work and be able to draw with confidence any of his/her ideas.
4. Architectural Drawing:representation of objects in plan, elevation and section using the Computer and CAD and other relevant software. The student will learn to express shapes, from simple to complex, in terms of plans, elevations and sections, using computers as a replacement of drafting board, T-square etc. This will never be a replacement for the ability to draw all ideas in free hand. Combined with that the student will develop powerful skill of representing an idea or an object in three dimensions in the sketch and in orthographic drawings on the computer.
5. History of Philosophy of Arts and Architecture: Introduction to Art & Aesthetics – painting, sculpture, music Perception in architecture, mental protocols, habits, questions, curiosity, seeking answers, basis of esthetics
Intermediate (2 years) Develop Architectural Design ability Architectural Design and Presentation Design will be taught with primary emphasis on the development of the student's conception of what he/she proposes. Contrary to the present day engineering-education-based approach which starts with emphasis on function, materials and then it is hoped that the shape will somehow be esthetically satisfying since it satisfies function, the student will be expected to understand the context and in that conceive a structure, draw it in freehand, and then satisfy its function. The end result will be an aesthetically satisfying building which also fulfills its function.
Understanding/ Mastering Architectural Technologies. Architectural Technologies:
Structures and Building Materials, structures, and all other technologies that contribute to the development of buildings and comfort of users, HVAC, Passive and Active Energy Consumption, Economics of Building and Energy.
All technologies will be taught as they are relevant and contribute towards the implementation of the Architectural vision. Geology, Foundation and Soils, Superstructures in Brick and Concrete, Behavior of Shapes, the Lintel, Arch, Vault, Dome, Shell, Tensile Light Weight Structures, Tents and such others
Appreciation of sources and content of History History of Civilization and Architecture which will depart from the Eurocentric view to a balanced tilt toward the regional history with the world as the context. History will be taught in the regional context, emphasizing the heritage of the region of South Asia and Middle East. Starting from prehistoric times, Indus Valley Civilization, Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East and India, to the later development of Egyptian, Persian, Greek and Roman Influences, Impact of Islam and the flowering of Muslim culture and Civilization and spread to India.
Final (2 Years) Develop Architectural Design ability Architectural Design and Presentationwith greater responsibility, maturity on the part of the students. Complex design issues and their understanding in written form is to be demonstrated. With the facility of design thought and presentation acquired in the three years the students in the final stage would be expected to have developed clear ideas of his philosophy of esthetics. His/her particular approach would be demonstrated in projects of ever increasing complexity culminating in an independent Thesis. Each assignment or project must be accompanied by a design report spelling out the design objectives of the student, in terms of his esthetic goals and the methods he has used to achieve those.
Understanding/ Mastering Architectural Technologies. Continuation of the Architectural Technologies, (Technology applied to Architecture) with understanding of the latest developments in materials and structures The students must understand the Potentials of technology and the new possibilities that are provided by the latest development in the formulation their ideas in Design.
Student's understanding of the Self in the wider context, with the ability to articulate his position. History of Philosophy of Architecture:
Continuation of the discourse on History of the Region as a source of esthetic development; European interventions during the colonial period and the new modes of influences during the post-independence period.
Developments in Europe in the Renaissance, the Imperialist drive, the Industrial Revolution in Europe and its aftermath for the world, the colonial intervention, new forms and esthetics developed in the Colonial Period; their effects on the present day thinking of clients and architects.
