MS Leading to P.hD.

MS Leading to P.hD. Program

Keeping in view the importance and applications of the field of meteorology, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) started Ms/PhD program in this subject in 2005. Since then the department of Meteorology has been a driving force behind global efforts to advance scientific expertise in the country by:

  • Fostering the growth of advanced studies and research in Meteorological Sciences.
  • Developing high level scientific programs keeping in mind the needs of the country and providing an international forum of scientific contact for scientists from all other countries.
  • Conducting research at the highest international standards and maintain conducive environment of scientific inquiry for the entire country.

The department provides scientists from the country with the continuing education and skills that they need to enjoy long and productive career. The main objective of this program is to produce scientists, who could meet future challenges in the field of meteorology. The overall research goal of the Department of Meteorology is to understand the basic mechanisms that control the evolution of the atmospheric environment and climatology. The courses of this program have been designed in such a way that students after completing their MS will be able to directly take Ph. D research abroad or at home.

In future it is our mission that the department of Meteorology will continue to educate and train scientists of the country and at the same time it will remain a world class research at home. The department is proud of its past and eager to meet the challenges of the future. One of its challenges is to successfully adopt to the evolving scene in science and science for development while retaining its core of rigor, strength and distinction.

Eligibility Criteria

An entry test will be conducted by the CIIT to select the students for MS leading to Ph.D. Students should have completed 16 years of education 'with specialization in any of the following subjects, from an accredited educational institution without any third division or D grade in the academic career, with at least 60% marks in the last public examination:

  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Space Sciences
  • Environmental Science with Physics and Mathematics during graduation
  • Computer Science with Physics and Mathematics during graduation
  • Geography with Physics and Mathematics during graduation
  • Geographic Information System with Physics and Mathematics during graduation

Program Objectives

The main objective of this program is to produce scientists which could meet the future challenges in the field of Meteorology, Remote Senisng & GIS and Seismology. The program is specially designed to cater for the needs of national research organizations. In pursuance of our mission statement, the Meteorology Department has adopted the following program goals:

To provide students with the necessary education and training to be successful and competitive in

  1. Their chosen career track by maintaining a current and rigorous curriculum.
  2. To provide students with a broad-based understanding of meteorological fundamentals.
  3. Space Sciences
  4. To provide students with several career tracks that allow them to develop specialized skills.
  5. To provide students with an environment that encourages experiential learning:
    • Data analysis and interpretation in a laboratory setting
    • Field trips and participation in field programs
    • To expose students to professionals and meteorological events beyond the campus environment.
  6. To provide students with opportunities to develop leadership skills
  7. Geographic Information System with Physics and Mathematics during graduation

The program is designed to cater for the needs of various research and commercial organization. We believe that the students who obtain the MS degree will be well equipped with software and hardware skills. In addition, for those who wish to continue their studies the courses are designed in such a manner that students will be able to directly take Ph.D. research abroad or at home. Students seeking admission in MS may have the following options for specialization;

  1. Meteorology
  2. Remote Sensing and GIS
  3. Seismology
  4. Marine Meteorology
  5. Numerical Weather Prediction
  6. Agro Meteorology
  7. Aviation Meteorology
  8. Climatology
